Use Whistle Phone on any SIP device – Make free VoIP calls to USA [Tutorial]

By Alok Saboo on June 21st, 2010

Since I wrote the last tutorial on how to make unlimited free calls to USA using Whistle on the iPhone/iPad, I have received several emails/tweets wanting a similar solution for people who do not own an Apple iPhone or iPad.

No iPhone or iPad, no problem!! Here is a tutorial on how to configure Whistle on various devices to make unlimited free calls to USA. Further, since Whistle provides you with a USA incoming number (DID) for free, you can use this tutorial to receive calls on your USA incoming number.

Creating A Whistle Account

The first step is to create a Whistle account. Start with downloading the Whistle desktop client. Whistle has a desktop client for both PC and Mac. The options that you see when you start the client are exactly the same as those on the iPhone/iPad version. Choose Create a Whistle Account to create a new account. Create and activate your new account. Please note your Whistle number, this is your local USA number. Anyone can dial this number and reach you and you do not have to pay a penny.

Using Whistle Phone to make free USA calls

You have several ways of using Whistle Phone:

  1. Whistle desktop client
  2. Any other SIP client
  3. VoIP hardware (ATA)

To use the Whistle Desktop client, choose Existing Whistle Account and enter your account number (the one you got in your welcome email after you have created your account) and your password.

Enter your account information in Whistle Phone desktop client

Enter your account information in Whistle Phone desktop client

Once you are logged in, you can enter the 10 digit number and make free calls to any USA landline or mobile.

Make free calls to USA using Whistle Phone

To use Whistle on any other SIP softphone, just enter the Whistle proxy information in your SIP soft phone.

SIP server: proxy.whistlephone.com

On my x-lite SIP client, the SIP configuration looks like:

Configure Whistle Phone on x-lite

To use Whistle on your ATA, just enter the above Whistle proxy information in your hardware’s SIP settings.

In my Linksys WRP400, the configuration looks like this.

Whistle_WRP400_config

Conclusion

Great, now you are all ready to enjoy unlimited free calls to USA using Whistle on any SIP device. You can also use the same device to receive calls. Just give your Whistle account number to your friends and family so that they can call you. This is also a great way of saving local cell phone plan minutes.

If you found this guide helpful, do not forget to share the link – your friends will also thank you :)

    didn’t work in linksys pap2

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Can you provide a screen shot of your settings? It is working perfectly on my ATA, which is not significantly different from a PAP2. Wondering why is it not working for you…

  • Bd

I have it setup on my PAP2T and works ok. My only gripe is that when someone calls my whistlephone number, they get “unable to connect” message most of the time. It only works for incoming some of the time, mostly not. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix that?

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Yes, Whistle Phone seems to not allow registration for incoming calls. Try changing the Use AUTH ID in the settings to YES and see if that helps.

      • Preet Mavi

hey bro i need the following for whistle sip
        1=registrar server
        2=realm
        3proxy server
        4proxy realm

        • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Most of these are usually optional, but try proxy.whistlephone.com in the server fields and whistlephone.com in the realm fields. Which SIP client are you using?

      • stav

this didnt help, any other ideas on how to avoid the infamous “I’m sorry but I cannot ceomplete your call”? Thanks

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

I agree that Whistle Phone on SIP is not perfect, especially for incoming calls. Why don’t you try with some other SIP client, e.g. Ekiga, to see if the problem is with X-lite of Whistle Phone? Let us know if you find something…

    • Plaff65

      Alok,

Thanks for your time. I appreciate your dedication to the VOIP community. I know it’s hard to come by, but are you aware of any other SIP clients that provide a free DID number and work with X-Lite?

      Thanks,

      Paul (plaff65)

      • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Paul, thanks for your kind words, much appreciated!!

As regards other VoIP providers, you can try IPKall. It provides a free USA DID that can be forwarded to a SIP account. Use IPKall with Voxalot free account. If you need help, follow our tutorial in configuring Voxalot on x-Lite. Hope this helps….do not hesitate to get in touch if you are still struggling with this.

I heard that you can also use this app on an iPod touch 4th gen. Is this true and if so what are the directions?

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

The iPod Touch 4G has a built in mic (if I am not mistaken), so you can use Whistle Phone straight off. Just install the app and you are good to go :)

What happens when you dial the IPkall number? What is the SIP address that you have entered in IPkall? Also, are you able to make test call using Voxalot (try the echo test – *600)?

Actually you cannot use WhistlePhone on “any SIP device” unless you also have a PBX, because their load balancing scheme requires simultaneous registration to multiple servers. If your SIP client only registers with 1 of the 4 WhistlePhone servers, it will not work reliably. See here for more information:

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Thanks for pointing it out, seems there are some issues with the way WhistlePhone handles incoming calls. May be I just got lucky :)

      • RAC

HI just wondering if anone know how to setup on a nokia phone like E series or N95 8gb with built in sip support, what would be settings,Any info would be appreciated, thanks

        • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

          Type your reply…

          • RAC

I am trying this setting in sip settings with no luck,

            Public User name: Sip:myphno@whistlephone.com
In Proxy server: Proxy Server add: Sip:proxy.whistlephone.com, Realm: Whistlephone.com and below my user name which is myphno and password.
Also i am using the same setting in the registrar server address below proxy server.
Anyone has a working setting for nokia phones.

            Thanks

          • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

In the Proxy Server Address, just enter proxy.whistlephone.com instead of SIP:proxy.whistlephone.com.

          • RAC

In nokia phones even if you remove sip thing it will still come back and i dont think it affects the address but i even tried that with no luck but then after going into the settings the sip thing came back.
I think maybe i am using wrong public user name: sip:myphno@whistlephone.com What could it be, so far i tried there my email with my registered account and also myphno@proxy.whistlephone.com with no luck.

          • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Can you try any other SIP service (e.g., Voxalot) to see whether the SIP stack is working? If the SIP stack is working then we can be sure that there is something wrong with the Whistle phone SIP settings that we have entered.

          • RAC

I have other Sip services registered on the same phone but they are working and i also tried my whistle account with x-lite its working fine there also so there’s some problem with the settings.

          • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

What error message are you getting?

          • RAC

I mean there’s no specific error message it just says it cant connect only in the phone though, its working everywhere elso though.

This is a great tutorial. I have whistle for my ipad and recently bought an android phone. There is nothing on the market for android that is simple as whistle phone. This method works and great and is straight forward. I tried it with sipdroid and within 2 minutes I was making call through my whistle account. Thank you for the tutorial.

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Thanks for your kind words, much appreciated!! I am glad the tutorial helped you.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Unfortunately, I do not have an Android device on hand. However, the configuration cannot be too difficult. If you can send me a screen shot of the configuration page, I can help you with it.

    • Baconismidog

I’m using this on Android (Dell Streak). Many of the Android clients have a problem where sound will only come out of the speaker – it is universal across many of the sip apps.  I found an old version of CSipSimple (http://code.google.com/p/csipsimple/downlo…_0.00-12-19.apk ) that works fine.  I’d try the version on the app store first, but if you only get sound from the speaker, just use the one I’ve posted.

The settings are simple and are exactly as Alok has lined out. The only things you need are your number, the url proxy.whistlephone.com and the port 5060.

If I’m on wifi my android now asks me if I want to use the Whistlephone sip or my regular minutes.  It’s pretty awesome!

        Thanks for the clarification…much appreciated!!
