If you are on a lookout for a cheap international calls, but do not want to deal with Betamax for various reasons, including payment issues (not being able to use Credit card or Paypal with Betamax) or billing disputes – your calls have been answered!! Today, we look at a new VoIP service provider claiming to offer the “Cheapest international rates ever” – Softcall. Softcall is a relatively new kid on the block, but seems to have a great offering.
Softcall has two options – Pay As You Go and Monthly Calling plans. In this post, we will focus on the Pay As You Go plan. Under this option, you can buy credits in to your account to make cheap international calls later. You can buy credits in blocks of $5, i.e., you can buy $5, $10, $15, and so on. There are no registration or setup charges, so the entire money is used to make calls. Moreover, unlike some other offers like Airtel IndiaOne Plan or Raza 1 cent plan, the credits do not expire until you use them.
Softcall also offers a custom pre-configured soft phone. Softcall also offers SIP support, so you can use Softcall on any SIP hardware or software. You can even use it on a mobile client (read how to set up SIP account on Nimbuzz or Fring). The Softcall SIP settings are:
SIP Server Or SIP Proxy Server: sip.softcall.me
SIP User ID: username
Authenticate ID: username
SIP password: password
SIP Port: 5060/5061
To make calls, just enter “00″ followed by country code + city code + phone number, i.e., to make call to India, dial 00 91 22 22222222. Please note that Softcall does NOT offer any local access numbers to make calls, so you will have to use the softphone or SIP clients to use Softcall. But, if you can live with that, Softcall has some great calling rates (you can find a complete list here):
| Country | Rate (US Cents) | Country | Rate (US Cents) |
| Hungary | 0.83 | Argentina | 1.14 |
| Colombia | 1.17 | France | 1.2 |
| Germany | 1.2 | Sweden | 1.2 |
| United Kingdom (UK) | 1.27 | USA/Canada | 1.3 |
| India | 1.3 | Thailand | 1.42 |
| Russia | 1.49 | Switzerland | 1.53 |
| Pakistan | 8.9 | Sri Lanka | 13.0 |
Some of these rates are truly exceptional, for instance Softcall offers India calling at 1.3 cents. This is even better than the best Betamax rate to India – the cheapest India calling offered by Betamax is around 1 euro cents or around 1.49 us cents, which is a good 15% more expensive than Softcall. So if you are sick of Betamax and looking for an alternative this may be a perfect option.
Let us know how was your experience with Softcall…
