How to add custom SIP accounts & configure Skype in Fring [Tutorial]

By Alok Saboo on October 21st, 2009

We discussed how to add custom SIP account in Nimbuzz. Continuing our Mobile VoIP (mVoIP) series, today we will discus how to add custom SIP account and configure Skype and other instant messaging (IM) accounts in Fring. Fring is another leading SIP client for various mobile platforms, including iPhone, Windows Mobile, and Symbian. I am using an iPhone for this tutorial, but you can easily follow this tutorial on any other platform. You can even use Fring on an iPod Touch.

  1. The first step is to get Fring on your phone. You can download Fring via SMS, WAP, or PC. If you are using iPhone or iPod, use this link to install Fring (iTunes link). Everything is free, so go ahead and do that!!
  2. If you using Fring for the first time, you will need to create an account – go ahead do that.
  3. After you start Fring, you will see the dialer:
    Fring_Home_Screen Fring_Dialer
  4. Click on the “More” tab to enter your account details to be used with Fring. Click Add-ons and you will see various accounts supported by Fring. You can use Skype, Twitter, MSN, ICQ, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, and any SIP account with Fring.
    Fring_Settings Fring_Addons
  5. You can enter all the accounts that you want to use with Fring. Remember, you can use Fring to chat or talk with your buddies on these networks, i.e., you can have FREE voice conversations with your online buddies. If you want to use Skype to make outgoing calls, just click Skype and enter your Skype login details and you will be able to use Skype with your Nimbuzz, i.e. you can chat your Skype friends, call your online friends for free, and use Skypeout to make calls.
    Fring_Skype_Account
  6. To add any other SIP account, select “SIP”. Fring already has pre-configured settings for a few providers, i.e., you only have to enter your login details and nothing else.
    Fring_SIP_Accounts
  7. For example, if you want to add Gizmo5 account, just click Gizmo and enter your login details.
  8. But, if you want to add a custom SIP account, select “Other” and enter your account details.
    Fring_Add_SIP_Account
  9. You can get the details from your SIP provider. You can find the Jumblo SIP settings, SmartVoIP SIP settings, ActionVoIP SIP settings, and other Betamax SIP settings.
  10. After you have entered all your account details, you can then use these accounts to connect with your buddies. For example, you can just click the “Buddy List” to see your online friends and connect with them.  Fring_Buddy_list
  11. If you want to make Phone calls using Fring, just click the “Dialer” tab. Here, you can enter the number. I could not find the option to use the phonebook to make calls, so you need to enter the phone number manually. If you want to change the country code, just click the flag on the left side and you can select the destination country. You can use your SIP account, Cellular network, or Skype Out to make calls. Choose the one that works best for you.
    Fring_Dialer_2

That’s it!!! You are all set to use Fring to make cheap phone calls. If you are using any of the Betamax services (e.g. Jumblo, SmartVoIP, ActionVoIP, etc.), you may even be able to make free calls to various destinations during the free days.

Hope this guide was helpful!! Do not hesitate to write back if you have any clarifications about this or require specific instructions for any specific provider.

hi Sir, your tutorials are marvelous. but my problem is different. Im in dubai, using Nokia E90, i installed nimbuzz on my fone, it dials the no# but both the party's cant hear the sound. I have a nimbuzz on my laptop too and there it works fine. only from the mobile it doesn't work… what is it??

  • Ahmed Khan

I had downloaded FRING as well, but its not even connecting from my mobile, it gives me an error that FRING cannot establish a connection with the server. i'm not a novice user to do silly mistakes, i checked everything but it doesn't connect.. i heard about RINGOMAX, but i coudn't find it anywhere to download

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

May be your ISP is blocking the SIP traffic. Why don't you try Ringomax…you can download it from https://ringomax.com/download.php

Let us know the results….hope this helps!!

Anyone know the proxy address for SMSDiscount.com ?

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo
  • medicnj

Using both Fring and SIPdroid on my Moto Drois on VZ. I think I have SMSdiscount set up correctly, ( I think) I can dial a #, it will ring at the other end, but I can't hear them or them me. Anyone have thoughts? With Sipdroid I also use pbxes.com. I see call history at SMSDiscount as well as on pbxes.com but again, no sound/mic.

    Thanks

    Pete

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Can you share a screenshot? Do you see the dialled calls in the history on SMSDiscount?

  • medicnj

Alok – thanks, here it is, let me know if the link worked,,, I didn't see how to post a pics here.

    http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/creativeapp

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Yeah, I can see the image – looks like the calls are getting through. Can you try using a desktop SIP client (Xlite) to see if there is some problem with the SIP client? If you have any other SIP account, try using that on Fring or SIP Droid to see if the problem is with SMS Discount? Remember, you can always get a free SIP account at Voxalot.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Did you enter the STUN server…if you are behind some firewall or such things that might cause problems. Try stun.smsdiscount.com in stun server field and see if that helps.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Lets see if the xlite thing works with the stun server….

  • medicnj

Using SMSDiscount, and the stun settings, Xlite will make a call, yet I get the same thing, I can not hear, nor the other end will hear my voice.

SMS Discount: User name : uuuuu Password : ppppp domain: sip.smsdiscount.com
display name: my phone # I want displayed, Authorization number Blank

and I set up the stun server as you said. any other thoughts? PS – voxalot does not look like it lets you call any # for free, only other voxalot people

  • medicnj

I set up an account with Voxalot, same thing there, I can make a call, hear ringing but no answer and it also never rings on the other side. so my guess is it's either the DROID / 2.01 Android, or Verizon blocking something. I'll try a desktop app to see if those work. thanks for your help.

  • medicnj

OK, I also downloaded XLITE – it seems to register both smsdiscount and voxalot, but I can't make calls there either, i hear a ring on voxalot but no answer, and just silence on smsdiscount…

  • MAk

suppose i do this for action voip and call any number wwat will be the charges(Action voip credit)????…..I mean will it be same as from pc to phone or phone-phone…PLz help!!!

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly, could you please rephrase your question.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

You can try Fring on your phone. Also, make sure that you have the right SIP settings. You can find SIP settings of all Betamax providers here.

    hi
I installed fring in nokia 5800 and i am trying to add Smartvoip settings, it asked me for user@sip.com : username@smartvoip.com (i also tried just user without@smartvoip.com)
    pwd: my password
    proxy: sip.smartvoip.com
but whenever i try to make make SIP call, connection just terminates
    Can you pls help me

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

I have never used Nokia 5800. Without knowing the details, here's my suggestion. If it asks you to enter in the format user@sip.com, try username@sip.smartvoip.com. If you can provide a screen shot, I may be in a better position to help. Let me know if this works. Thanks!!

  • Manoj

    Thanks for your quick reply
i tried username@sip.smartvoip.com and it worked, you are genius.

       How can check Account balance

      • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Your account balance should be visible in your account panel.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Try using the Voxalot echo test, to make sure that there is nothing wrong with your Internet connection. If that does not help, try using Nimbuzz.

I am assuming that your ISP is not restricting your VoIP traffic.

Thanks for the tutorial, I hope one day I can buy credits from Fring company directly.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Why not, you can buy credits directly using your credit card/paypal…

  • Maile Dearman

    Great blog – awesome post

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Fring seems to be at logger-heads with Skype and so the option to configure Skype has been removed. You can use Nimbuzz on your Phone to access Skype.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Depending on your SIP account provider, you can add credits to your account using any of the payment methods supported.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

You can use any VoIP account on Fring, Nimbuzz, or any other SIP client for FREE. These SIP clients do not charge any fee for using the app. The only charge that you may incur is when you buy these apps. However, given that Fring is a free app, you do not incur any charges with it. Hope it helps…

dear alok pl help me,i am using sony erission xperia x2 but i cant connect to fring, nimbus, skype.sometime work bt i cant hear oposite side can u pl give me any sugession my mail id khasru071518@yahoo.com

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Can the other side hear your voice? One way audio is typically a good indicator of some kind of traffic shaping. Where are you located? Can you try using your VoIP account using a regular SIP client (e.g., X-lite) and see if you are able to make calls.

If you are still having trouble, I would suggest you follow the basic VoIP troubleshooting steps and see if you find something there. You may also want to see how to optimally set up your ATA/Router for VoIP traffic. Let me know if you still have issues..

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Adding caller ID needs to be supported by your VoIP provider. Further, Fring is a very basic SIP client and does not have the feature to define the advanced options, such as caller-ID. If your VoIP provider supports caller-ID, you can try some advanced SIP clients, e.g., Media5 fone,

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Fring is a mobile VoIP client and is not designed to work on desktops/laptops. If you are looking for a desktop SIP client, you can try x-lite from Counterpath or Blink SIP client from AG Projects.

      hi,
I am trying to install on my HTC touch pro2. installation goes fine. In the SIP I choose others. I have a proxy sip01.brains.net. it does not work. after I enter my user id, pass word and proxy. It keeps on subscribing forever. Same settings on my adroid works. offcourse the software for that is also from android.
Can you think of a possible reason why it is stuck in subscribing?

      • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Where are you located? Your carrier may have disabled the SIP stack on your device. Try another SIP softphone on your phone and see if the same problem persists. Besides this, there could be a few other things that I must point out. To isolate the root case, we need to make sure that the other parts of the service are note broken. I will suggest that you go over the VoIP troubleshooting guide to help us diagnose the issue.

Let me know the results and I will be very happy to help you out further.

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Are you able to use any other VoIP provider on your new version of Fring? You can try the free Voxalot SIP account to see if that works.

      Thanks!!

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

There is an option to add Skype account in Fring, no other settings required.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Use sip.actionvoip.com to configure ActionVoIP on Fring.

  • Cnuarakolu

how can i credit in to the sip call and how can i get proxy address iam in sudan right now i have fring user id but sip call is not going.

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

You can add credit directly from your account, but I am not sure if you will be able to use it from Sudan. Your ISP may have restricted SIP calls. Follow our tutorial to troubleshoot your VOIP connection.
