Unlimited International Calling Plans (incl India) from Versafon [Review]
| By Alok Saboo on September 10th, 2009 |
Looks like there is a latent demand for unlimited calling plans. Vonage created quite a stir with its $24.99 Vonage World Plan offering unlimited international calls to over 60 countries. Today we present another unlimited international calling option – Versafon. If you are looking for an unlimited calling option, you must read on to find out if Versafon is the right option for you…

Versafon is a new entrant in the VoIP space and is looking to create some buzz with its unlimited calling plans. The company offers two unlimited calling plans: Unlimited Silver and Unlimited Gold Plans. The only difference between the two plans is the number of countries included. Under the Unlimited Silver Plan, you can make unlimited calls to 12 countries for only $7.95 per month:
Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States
Under the Unlimited Gold Plan, you can make unlimited calls to 42 countries for only $15.95 per month:
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South, Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City
In addition to the (apparently) low rates, you get two SIP accounts with your account, i.e. you can configure them as two lines on any SIP device. You can bring your own ATA (a nice option to consider is Linksys PAP2) or a softphone (e.g., x–lite) or you can rent a preconfigured ATA from Versafon for $2.95 per month. However, you can get the router for FREE if you sign up for 1 year contract.
If all this sounds too good to be true, you are right. Read on the finer points before you make any decision:
- For Versafon, unlimited means 1000, i.e., you can only make 1000 minutes of international calls under these plans. Effectively you would be paying 0.795 cents per minute under the Unlimited Silver Plan and 1.595 cents per minute under the Unlimited Gold Plan.
- Further, even within each country you cannot make calls to all cities, landlines, or mobiles. For example, Indian landlines are not allowed and not all mobile networks are supported. So be sure to check your specific city before you sign up. Under the Unlimited Silver Plan, the options are further restricted. For instance, in Australia you can make calls to only Melbourne.
- Another point to consider is the quality of the service. Versafon does not have a dedicated SIP server, they are using their web server to provide SIP service. This is obviously not the optimal setup and may lead to performance issues.
- The company charges you a Regulatory fee of $1.5 and also has provisions to charge you Universal Service Fee (USF) in the future.
While it sounded great, there are several limitations to these plans leaving me less than excited. This does not mean, it is worthless. If you do not make enough calls to merit the Vonage World Plan and if your destination is covered by Versafon, you can give them a try. Versafon offers a 30 day money back guarantee, so there is no harm trying them. Let us know if about your experience with Versafon.
