How-TO Add Custom SIP Account in Nimbuzz [Tutorial]

By Alok Saboo on September 16th, 2009

From the number of comments/questions that I get, it seems that Mobile VoIP (mVoIP) is growing fast. If you are still not familiar with the idea, I would recommend that you read Mobile VoIP (mVoIP) for dummies. Today, I am going to provide a simple tutorial on how to add a custom SIP provider in Nimbuzz. Nimbuzz is a leading SIP client for various mobile platforms, including iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Blackberry, etc. I will provide a complete review of the Nimbuzz application later, but meanwhile here is a tutorial that will help you started and make cheap of free international VoIP calls from your Mobile. I am using an iPhone for this tutorial, but you can easily follow this tutorial on any other platform. You can even use Nimbuzz on iPod Touch.

  1. The first step is to create an account and get Nimbuzz on your phone. Everything is free, so go ahead and do that.
  2. Fire up Nimbuzz on your phone and enter your Nimbuzz login details.
  3. After you login, you will see multiple tabs. Click on the Phone Calls tab and you will see the contacts in your phone book. If you haven’t added any SIP account, you will only be able to use your Cell Phone to make calls (see picture below).
  4. To add other accounts to your Nimbuzz profle, click the “Cell Phone >” button so that you can add other accounts through which you can make calls. You can make calls using your Cell Phone, Skype, and any other SIP account.
  5. If you want to use Skype to make outgoing calls, just click Skype and enter your Skype login details and you will be able to use Skype with your Nimbuzz, i.e. you can chat your Skype friends, call your online friends for free, and use Skypeout to make calls.
  6. To add any other SIP account, select “Other VoIP Account”. Nimbuzz already has configured setting for a few providers, i.e. you only have to enter your login details and nothing else.
  7. For example, if you want to add Gizmo5 account, just click Gizmo5 and enter your login details.
  8. But, if you want to add a custom SIP account, select “Other VoIP Account” and enter your account details.
  9. You can get the details from your SIP provider. You can find the Jumblo SIP settings, SmartVoIP SIP settings, ActionVoIP SIP settings, and other Betamax SIP settings.
  10. Once you have added the details, you can select your SIP account to make calls.
  11. Just enter the number and start talking…

If you are using any of the Betamax services (e.g. Jumblo, SmartVoIP, ActionVoIP, etc.), you will be able to make free calls to the free destinations during the free days. Hope this helps you in using your favorite VoIP provider and making cheap or free international calls.

Do not hesitate to write back if you have any clarifications about this or require specific instructions for any specific provider.

Follow our voip trouble shooting guide and see if that helps. Try using Voxalot SIP settings and trying out the echo test.

The screenshots that you provided do seem to suggest that SIP is not available. Let me double check meanwhile..thanks for pointing it out.

    Dear Sir,

I have nimbuz since long time back , I can use it fine from my PC with VPN , but If i connect without any VPN it will connect , I can call , they will receive my call but niether me or the destination can hear any thing but with VPN its ok , do you have solution for this case, I am using actionvoip.
    regards,
    Munther

  21. Alok Saboo says:

Looks like your ISP is shaping your VoIP traffic. WHere are you located? If you are in one of the countries where VoIP is still not permitted, then you may have to use VPN.

However, I would encourage you to try using Proxy server to bypass your ISP restriction. This is a completely FREE method :)

  25. Fonzi says:

    Hello,
Does anyone know how to make my own number displayed with SIP ? My friends always see “hidden number”

    Best Regards

  26. Alok Saboo says:

Setting up caller-id is not that difficult (just change it in your SIP settings in the Name/Display as field). However, the problem is that this field is often ignored by VOIP provider and hence your caller-id is not transmitted and hence the receiver sees “Hidden Number” or “Unknown Number” or “Withheld”.

If caller ID is really important to you, you will have to go with a reputable VoIP providers like LocalPhone

  27. Fonzi says:

yes, it works fine with Siphon for example, but I don't find where to change this setting in Nimbuzz, there are only 4 fields for sip configuration and it works only with my user name and not my number…

  28. Alok Saboo says:

You are right, Nimbuzz does not allow you to set up your caller ID. I guess, in an attempt to simplify the interface, they removed the option to set up Display Name (which is unfortunate IMO).

You can try a full fledged SIP client such as Media5-fone to get more control over your calls.

  30. Alok Saboo says:

You can find all the Betamax SIP settings here. Let me know if you need additional details.

  31. Ali Ah says:

I m having Spice QT-66 Mobile & downloaded Nimbuzz newer Version, but the problem is SIP call option is not showing in the Settings.

  32. Alok Saboo says:

Unfortunately, I do not have the particular handset to provide the exact location. However, if you look around the dialpad, you may find something there. Do you have a separate Settings tab? What are the options that you see on the page where you add other accounts?

If you prefer, kindly send me the screenshots of the screens that you see and I should be able to help you out.
