How-TO Add Custom SIP Account in Nimbuzz [Tutorial]

By Alok Saboo on September 16th, 2009

From the number of comments/questions that I get, it seems that Mobile VoIP (mVoIP) is growing fast. If you are still not familiar with the idea, I would recommend that you read Mobile VoIP (mVoIP) for dummies. Today, I am going to provide a simple tutorial on how to add a custom SIP provider in Nimbuzz. Nimbuzz is a leading SIP client for various mobile platforms, including iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian, Blackberry, etc. I will provide a complete review of the Nimbuzz application later, but meanwhile here is a tutorial that will help you started and make cheap of free international VoIP calls from your Mobile. I am using an iPhone for this tutorial, but you can easily follow this tutorial on any other platform. You can even use Nimbuzz on iPod Touch.

  1. The first step is to create an account and get Nimbuzz on your phone. Everything is free, so go ahead and do that.
  2. Fire up Nimbuzz on your phone and enter your Nimbuzz login details.
    Nimbuzz iPhone app signing in
  3. After you login, you will see multiple tabs. Click on the Phone Calls tab and you will see the contacts in your phone book. If you haven’t added any SIP account, you will only be able to use your Cell Phone to make calls (see picture below).
    Nimbuzz iPhone app Address book
  4. To add other accounts to your Nimbuzz profle, click the “Cell Phone >” button so that you can add other accounts through which you can make calls. You can make calls using your Cell Phone, Skype, and any other SIP account.
Nimbuzz iPhone app add SIP account
  5. If you want to use Skype to make outgoing calls, just click Skype and enter your Skype login details and you will be able to use Skype with your Nimbuzz, i.e. you can chat your Skype friends, call your online friends for free, and use Skypeout to make calls.
  6. To add any other SIP account, select “Other VoIP Account”. Nimbuzz already has configured setting for a few providers, i.e. you only have to enter your login details and nothing else.
Nimbuzz iPhone app add SIP provider
  7. For example, if you want to add Gizmo5 account, just click Gizmo5 and enter your login details.
Nimbuzz iPhone app add Gizmo account
  8. But, if you want to add a custom SIP account, select “Other VoIP Account” and enter your account details.

  9. You can get the details from your SIP provider. You can find the Jumblo SIP settings, SmartVoIP SIP settings, ActionVoIP SIP settings, and other Betamax SIP settings.
  10. Once you have added the details, you can select your SIP account to make calls.
  11. Just enter the number and start talking…

If you are using any of the Betamax services (e.g. Jumblo, SmartVoIP, ActionVoIP, etc.), you will be able to make free calls to the free destinations during the free days. Hope this helps you in using your favorite VoIP provider and making cheap or free international calls.

Do not hesitate to write back if you have any clarifications about this or require specific instructions for any specific provider.

The SIP settings do not change whether you use it on mobile or desktop. So, use the same SIP settings and you should be able to access VoIP.

I have Apple iPhone 3G (8 GB) with version 3.1. To use my jumblo account to call India from here in QATAR ( I am working in qatar) I have downloaded Nimbuzz in my iPhone and created my Nimbuzz account.
Then like other my collegue who are having Nokia Phone and using Nimbuzz with smartvoip and jumblo, I also tried and thats how i got you on net and found your instruction very useful and friendly, however i am not getting the call tab as you have given in the instruction but from the calling tab in the setting, I am getting two option 1) Nimbuzzout (which is checked and always selected) anad 2) SIP.. so i am selecting SIP which is giving me the list of Voip provider like Numgo,,, VoX GULFSIP etc…and there jumblo or freecall are not there (which i want to use) so I am selecting Other VoiP account and i am getting Username .. passwork .. Domain and Proxy field (optional) to be filled up.. I have jumblo account (and using on my laptop)
Now as per yr reply and in the instruction and setting of the jumblo what i am getting is proxy server which is sip.jumblo.com and i am writing there (however it is otional) I am also providing my username and password , doenst know what to write in domain and i am writing there 212.282.16.8 as all other collegue are using that in their nokia mobile… but then when i save this setting.. nothing happens.. no error msg or anything.. Just its not going to my SIP account ..
Any help if somebody has encountered the same problem and found the solution?

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Yogesh, I do not have Jumblo account so I cannot exactly replicate your situation. However, I was able to successfully register and use Other SIP provider inside Nimbuzz.

You mentioned that Nimbuzzout is always checked, that does not seem to be correct. You can choose your SIP account to make calls instead of using Nimbuzzout. If Nimbuzzout is checked, then it will be used to make calls. Just press and hold on the left of the SIP box in the “Select your VoIP Provider” page and you should be able to select your SIP account. Let me know if that does not work and I will be happy to post pictures of my setup. Just to clarify, I did not enter anything in the domain field.

Alternatively, may I suggest that you try Fring. You can read how to add custom SIP accounts in Fring. Also, just to make sure that the problem is not with your Jumblo account, can you try your Jumblo SIP account on a desktop SIP client (e.g., X-lite).

Let me know how it goes….

      • Yogeshthakrar

Bingo.. I hv installed Nimbuzz on laptop and set Jumblo in VoiP provider and it was working. THEN, i tried same on my iPhone and without any problem it starts working !! (Before it was not) I do not know how technically it explain as a solution but it works.. so if anybody has similar problem, then can try
Thanks Alok, u r doing a wonderful work here to help ppl, salute ;)

Yogesh, I am glad that it worked for you in the end…enjoy your VoIP calls!!

  • Msondarjee

I’m using Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i and I could not see any of these settings in Nimbuzz I have installed in my phone. pls help me.

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Given the recent updates, the interface may have changed slightly, but the settings should be available. Unfortunately, I do not have the Xperia to provide you with step by step instructions, but if you can provide some screenshots from the app, I will be more than happy to guide you. Let me know..

  • Khaderbabu

pl i would like to know that poxi adress is… voipinfocenter.com using one of the sip. could you tell me this poxi adress for which service.

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Voipinfocenter does not seem to provide SIP support…

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

What client are you using on your Nokia 6120C? Try using another client. The call quality issue on Windows Mobile may be due to codecs that you client is using. Once again, try using a different SIP client and see if that help.

In addition, I will suggest that you try the service on a desktop SIP client. That will help you diagnose the issue.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Unfortunately, I do not have the device that you have mentioned and hence cannot provide the exact instructions. But, I would assume that the options may not be too different from what I have highlighted in the post. If you can mail me the screenshots, I will be more than happy to provide you the exact configuration.

  • Senthil34in

    Nokia 03-01

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly. Are you not able to find where to enter the SIP settings?

  • Rento Protech

how can i find the proxy and server of feminacall1.tk

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

I am not sure if FeminaCall provides SIP services. Their website did not inspire lot of trust and I will not advocate the service.

  • Vkshiyad

Blackberry is accept the sip calls thru Nimbuzz?

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

I am not sure if I understand your question. If you are asking whether Nimbuzz will work on Blackberry, then yes – Nimbuzz client is available on the Blackberry platform.

I do not have a BB device to give you the exact instruction, but the steps should not be too different from other devices. All you need to do is add a new account and enter the Nymgo SIP settings:

SIP Server Or SIP Proxy Server: ata.nymgo.com
    SIP User ID: nymgo username
    Authenticate ID: nymgo username
    SIP password: nymgo password
    SIP Port: 5060
    Codec Used: g729
    STUN Server: stun.nymgo.com
    STUN port: 80

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

I am not sure if I understand your question. Could you please provide more details…thanks!!

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

It depends on which Blackberry phone you have. If you have a SIP client on your phone, you can make SIP calls.

  • Inshu Mohd

I am using Acer E130, when I try to do SIP settings in Nimbuzz its prompting for Domain, can you help me? I saw the earlier posts, when you say provider are you talking about the internet provider ISP?

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Just enter the SIP server of the provider that you are using in the Domain field. If you are not sure about the SIP server, let me know the provider that you are using and I will be happy to provide you the same.

Your need a SIP phone that is compatible with your phone. I understand that Nimbuzz does not work with the phone that you have. Have you tried Fring?

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Are you getting any error message? What device are you using?

  • Bimal0504

    All information are good .
What is the domain name for other sip account ?

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Not sure if I understand your question…what domain name are you looking for?

  • None

Why isn’t there a Voip for Java phones?? n when can that be possible?

    • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

Feature phones (most java phones) do not have the processing power to handle VoIP. Also, given that we are moving towards smart phones, developers do not want to invest their resources on feature phones.

  • http://truvoipbuzz.com Alok Saboo

CheapVoIP does not support SIP :(
